Prayer is important in our daily lives. It is the means in which we communicate with God. God wants us to have a close relationship with him and prayer is the means to do so.
Whenever we start praying more, it will leave no room for the devil to creep into our thoughts and tell us that we are all alone on our christian journey. When we truly pray, we should be casting all our cares on God who is more than able to work everything out for our good.
In the same vein, our children should learn to pray from a tender age. Some of the ways to develop this habit include the following:
1. Learn by watching - If you really want your child to learn how to pray, you have to start praying around them. By watching and listening to you, they will know the posture for prayer, the words to say and the attitude portrayed towards prayer.
2. Memorizing prayers - One of the first prayers that most children learn is the Lord' s Prayer. Other ones include the prayers memorized for meal time. If we try our best to start saying these prayers around them everyday, whether at meal time or bed time, they will eventually learn all the words on their own. To test how much they know, you can ask them to say it and help them along the way. Another effective method is to say the words and then let them repeat after you. You can do this every day until they eventually learn the words on their own
3. Repetition - It is said that it takes long to make a habit and easy to break one. It is the same with prayer. If you want them to learn and develop a lifestyle of prayer, you have to let them pray everyday. When they wake up out of beds in the morning, let them pray, before they eat, let them pray, before they go to bed, let them pray. I can assure you that if you do this, a habit will be developed.
